DandeLion Smoothie

If you have been keeping up with our blog thus far, you know that here, at Crafted Wellness,  we are big fans of green smoothies.  So you can imagine how excited we get over new recipes and new ingredients.

Last week, I experimented with dandelion greens and LOVED the results so much I needed to share them with you!  The name alone makes me want to ROAR!!  DandeLION!!  Talk about a strong word!  And the greens are just as bad-ass…

You are probably familiar with dandelions…  They are the yellow flowers that pop up during springtime, and later turn to seed, which transforms them into those gray, fluffy looking flowers that you can blow on and watch as the floating seeds disperse in the air.  The edible dandelion greens are the long, green leaves that surround these ever-changing flowers.

DandeLION greens

Dandelion greens are pretty awesome… They are loaded with calcium and iron, and are known for their liver cleansing qualities.  Dandelion is used medicinally to support the health of the liver, which is the body’s master detoxifier and cleanses our system of environmental and metabolic wastes.  Because the liver also regulates hormone activity, most hormonal imbalances are treated with dandelion, including PMS, menopausal problems, erratic mood swings, and reproductive issues.  Ayurveda traditions focus on dandelion in the spring to cleanse the body of all of the mucous from the winter hibernation.

Dandelion greens are slightly bitter in flavor, so using sweet tasting fruit along with the greens will help to mask their natural bitterness.

Parsley is another great ingredient to include in your green smoothies, and it’s not only because of its fun flavor…  Like dandelion greens, parsley is known for its cleansing properties, but instead of the liver, parsley focuses its detoxifying energy on the kidneys.  It flushes the toxins out of the kidneys, which helps to prevent kidney stones and improves kidney ailments.  It is included in both smoothie recipes below to add an extra kick of cleansing that does our bodies good!

Ok.  Lets get our awesome green smoothie cleansing on:

“Oh My Green Goodness, thats tasty!”

“Green Goodness”

(makes 2 servings)

1 large handful of spinach

1 large handful of kale

1 banana

1 cup frozen mango

1/2 cucumber, peeled

Juice from 1/2 a lemon

1-2 cups cold water

Begin by adding 1 cup of water, lemon juice, kale and spinach to your blender;  blend until smooth. Then add the banana, cucumber, frozen mango, and more water if necessary; blend until smooth.  Voila!  A beautiful green smoothie for you to enjoy.

Your smoothie will stay good for up to 2 days in a sealed container in the fridge, so feel free to make a big batch that will last you.  You can also separate portions into containers and keep them in the freezer until you are ready to have them.  *But remember, your smoothie will need time to defrost, so place it in the fridge the night before enjoying it.

Want to add some extra sparkle to our green smoothie?  Try some fresh herbs, like mint, basil or parsley to bring out different flavors, include some hemp seeds or hemp protein powder to give it a protein boost, or get a blast of the green goddess chlorophyll by adding 1 tbsp of spirulina.

Super Green Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to sneak superfoods into your diet.  There are so many to choose from, all offering their own benefits and “super” qualities.  One of my favorites is spirulina, a blue green algae that adds a strong green color, and an awesome protein punch!

Spirulina is 55-70% protein by weight, making it the highest form of plant protein available.  It is a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids, so it is a great substitute for those staying away from animal sources of protein.  This super green superfood is rich in B vitamins and gammalinolenic acid (GLA), which helps to reduce inflammation in the body.  When you include spirulina into your diet, whether it be in your smoothie or otherwise, it provides you with all of this goodness PLUS it promotes immune health and works to protect your body from environmental stress.  Are you ready to dive in and give it a try??

You will need:

1 cup almond milk (or nut-milk of your choice)

a super green smoothie

1-2 handfuls of baby spinach

1 green apple, diced

1 ripe banana

1 cup frozen pineapple

2 teaspoons spirulina

½ cup water

Simply place all of these goodies into your favorite blender and watch the green magic appear as you blend, blend, blend.
